T09: Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding
Instructor:
Ken Brown, P.Eng., Alberta Research Council
Who should attend:
Reservoir, production, exploitation and business development managers, engineers, and technologists who are or may be interested in developing an economically successful CO
2 enhanced recovery or storage project.
Tutorial Description:
This tutorial provides an examination of the practical business aspects that need to be understood and dealt with to ensure an economically successful CO
2 miscible flood. The tutorial will focus on: evaluation of alternate suppliers of CO
2; transport issues; options within the field to be flooded; partner issues; government negotiations; economic/risk issues; operations management; and, societal constraints.
The development of the EnCana Weyburn CO2 Storage and EOR Project will be the main example, but the principals are applicable to other fields. The business issues in any major energy project for any Company are very similar to those encountered at Weyburn. Participants will understand not just ‘what’ happened in Weyburn, but ‘how’ and ‘why’ it happened and how to formulate an execution strategy to ensure their project is economically successful.
