Guidelines for Lecturers

DLs will be selected for a one-year term by a DL Committee composed of the DL Director from the National Board (who shall chair the committee), the Chairman of the National Board (as available), and other appropriate Petroleum Society members of their choosing (although senior members of the Society should be utilized, including perhaps those on the Section Affairs, Programs and Continuing Education Committees). Selection criteria are to be defined and annually reviewed by the DL Committee, and their DL selections (at least three and no more than six per year) should be reviewed for endorsement with the National Board prior to notifying DLs. In any event, a DL shall be a member in good standing of the Petroleum Society.

• The one-year term of DLs will generally run from September to August, approximately coincident with the programs of the Sections which commence in the Fall of each year. Therefore, the DL Committee should plan and organize their selection, vetting, and announcement/promotion processes on this basis.

• The DL Committee will be expected to draw heavily from the existing bank of JCPT Distinguished Authors, giving preference to those who are dynamic and very practical presenters. The Committee should also strive to recruit a slate of DLs who will collectively cover a wide spectrum of topics (i.e., Reservoir Engineering, Improved Oil Recovery, Heavy Oil and Oil Sands, Drilling and Completions, Operations), and ideally should enlist DLs who each can speak from multiple areas of expertise.

DLs will be announced/recognized as soon as is practicable at least in the Society’s Web site, in the JCPT, and at the Awards Banquet of the annual Canadian International Petroleum Conference (CIPC); other venues as appropriate may be used to announce and promote the DLs. In each instance where DLs are recognized, it would be appropriate (especially in the formative years of the DL Program) to note the objectives of the DL Program.

• Note that the Awards Banquet of the CIPC may be used to announce incoming DLs who have just been selected and who will begin their one-year term in the current year, and as well to thank and honour the outgoing DLs just completing their one-year term from the previous year.

It should be made clear to DLs that accepting the honour of being so named carries certain obligations. Following official recognition of a DL (including the approval by the DL Committee of the DL’s presentation), Sections may then request a DL to present at a specific event. As negotiated by the Committee/Petroleum Society Office based on the availability of the DL for that particular date, the willingness of the Section to provide sufficient funding, and logistics/travel considerations (which will be arranged and coordinated by the DL with help from the Office), a DL may deliver his/her presentation to a Section*. Note that a DL would ordinarily not be expected to present to more than four Sections during his/her term (more or less than four presentations may occur subject to the interest expressed by the Sections and the availability of the DL).

* As indicated in "Objectives," a DL presentation will generally be given at a luncheon venue, which could accommodate a 30 – 45 minute talk (the DL has the discretion of expanding the topic as the circumstances of the meeting allow); it should cover a broad technical topic in his/her area(s) of expertise, and it should emphasize the DL’s technical experience and guidance to enhance the understanding of a general audience of technical personnel regarding that topic. In the process of approving the DL presentation, the DL Committee should be available to provide guidance and a "dry run" forum to the DL in preparation of his/her presentation.
