CIPC-2006-08: Material Balance and Other Analytical Methods Overview

Instructor/s: Richard Baker, Epic Consulting Services Ltd.

Who Should Attend: This tutorial is designed for junior and intermediate reservoir, petroleum, and exploitation engineers/technologists who are involved in reservoir evaluations, reservoir engineering studies and reserves determinations.

Tutorial Description: The following topics will be covered in this tutorial:

• Primary objectives of material balance calculations

• Practical applications of material balance theory and discussion of relevant parameters

• Evaluate inflow performance for both horizontal and vertical wells

• Solve simple coning problems, including prediction of critical rates, breakthrough times, and post breakthrough performance

• Tools / correlations available.

"Please be advised that you need to bring a laptop computer to the Tutorial. The instructor strongly encourages participants to bring their own laptop computers in order to complete exercises and gain the most from the Tutorial."

Instructor/s: Richard Baker is the President and founder of Epic Consulting Services Ltd. He has worked on numerous reservoir characterization/reservoir simulation projects worldwide, including projects in Russia, Indonesia, South America, the Middle East, and North America. He has taught reservoir characterization and reservoir simulation courses both in Canada and internationally. Previously, he was a senior reservoir engineer at Shell Canada and Husky Oil. His professional interests are focused on reservoir management, naturally fractured reservoirs, reservoir characterization, horizontal wells, EOR, and reservoir simulation. Richard obtained his M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Calgary and holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta.
