A Message from the CIPC Conference Chairmen

On behalf of the Petroleum Society of CIM, we are proud to extend an invitation to our industry colleagues to join us in celebrating our seventh annual Canadian International Petroleum Conference—also representing the Society's 57th Annual Technical Meeting.  The Conference theme Because Technology Changes Everything reflects the challenges our industry faces with regard to maturing basins, frontier development, unconventional resources, fluctuating commodity prices, and of course the very important environmental concerns that face us all.

Our dedicated team of volunteers is working hard to bring you a diversified program with a truly international flavour.  The Conference profile continues to grow worldwide, and we are soliciting papers from authors from around the world.

We are, of course, excited to return to the outstanding facilities at the Calgary Stampede Roundup Centre which provide our delegates easy access to the Global Petroleum Show—the world’s largest petroleum show, organized by dmg world media.  Visitors to the Global Petroleum Show have instant access to the latest technologies from a wide spectrum of national and international exhibitors.

The three-day CIPC Technical Conference, June 13 – 15, is anticipated to feature over 150 relevant technical presentations, including such varied topics as:

  • Business Development and Risk Management
  • Cold Production of Heavy Oil
  • Conventional Oil and Gas Improved Recovery
  • Drilling Engineering
  • Facilities
  • Health, Safety, and Regulatory Issues
  • Numerical Simulation
  • Oil and Gas and the Environment
  • Production Operations
  • Reservoir Rock and Fluid Characterization
  • Solvent-Based Heavy Oil/Bitumen IOR
  • Thermal Methods in Heavy Oil/Bitumen Recovery
  • Well Completions and Stimulation
  • Well Test Analysis

In addition to the technical presentations, a number of our Special Interest Groups will be back with Special Sessions, including panel discussions that will appeal to the general industry professional.  Two sessions featuring our Graduate Student Presentation Competition—continuing our long-held tradition of "seeding" industry with promising young talents—highlight the diversity of our program.

This year we will again be offering the very popular half-day Tutorial sessions on Monday June 12th preceding the main Conference.  Take advantage of this opportunity to "tune up" your skills guided by the industry’s pre-eminent technical leaders.  Proposed topics include:

  • Bitumen Upgrading and Marketing
  • CO2 Flooding
  • Conventional Heavy Oil Recovery Techniques
  • Earth Stresses, Drilling and Borehole Stability
  • Estimation of Petroleum and Natural Gas Reserves Using Probabilistic Methods
  • Fundamentals of Petroleum and Natural Gas Pricing
  • Fundamentals of Reservoir Simulation
  • Heavy Oil and Bitumen Recovery using non-SAGD Thermal Methods
  • Heavy Oil and Bitumen Recovery using SAGD
  • Introduction to Well Test Analysis
  • Material Balance and Other Analytical Methods Overview
  • Modern Production Decline Analysis
  • National Instrument 51-101 for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Bitumen
  • Non-SAGD Horizontal Well Recovery Techniques
  • Open- and Cased-hole Well Logging Interpretation Overview
  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Reserves Evaluation Overview
  • Production Prediction and Evaluation of Coalbed Methane
  • Reservoir Surveillance Methods
  • Water Flooding.

This Conference continues to be one of the best values in the industry.  If you are not a Petroleum Society member, your registration fee will include membership in the Society and all of the benefits that entails to the end of the year.  Corporate passes will again be offered to the industry as their outstanding value becomes recognized; managers can tailor a Corporate Package to suit their needs.  These are ideal for companies or departments wishing to send a number of staff to attend a particular technical paper or Special Session, but who might not have time to take in the entire three-day Conference. Recognizing that many of you have hectic schedules, we will also continue to offer single day registration for individual registrants.

This Conference would not be possible without the volunteer efforts of your peers and the financial support of our sponsors, all of whom are dedicated to the concept of promoting and exchanging technology.  If you plan to stay abreast of the latest industry advances, exchange ideas with mentors and peers, and expand your horizons, you owe it to yourself to attend this Conference—so mark the 12th to the 15th of June in your calendar today!  If you are coming from out of town, why not plan on spending the weekend in Calgary or the surrounding area such as Banff and enjoy some western sights and hospitality.  In particular, our foreign guests will find Calgary to be a budget-friendly conference destination.

Our Website will be updated on a regular basis as the program unfolds, so please check back often for details and deadlines.

We look forward to seeing you there!
