A message from the Conference Chair

On behalf of the Petroleum Society of Canada, it is my privilege to invite fellow colleagues to the Canadian International Petroleum Conference, Canada's premier technical meeting for oil and gas professionals. The year 2009 will mark CIPC as the Petroleum Society's 60th Annual Technical Meeting, with the theme, - Because Technology Changes Everything, - but also the first as an independent organization distinct from the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

The Conference, held from the 16th to the 18th of June 2009, takes place at Calgary's downtown TELUS Convention Centre. Conference attendees are also encouraged to visit our Technology Exhibition, being held at the same location.

This year the Conference will take place amid a market landscape that has seen dramatic changes over the last 12 months. We face the challenges imposed on our Industry of low commodity prices coupled with scare capital resources - the pressures to more efficiently go about our business and still meet our stakeholder expectations are high. Developing frontier and unconventional resources, meeting increasing cost pressures and ensuring sustainable production, while at the same time preserving our environment for future generations, is not a simple task.

To help us meet our difficult challenges, my hard-working volunteers have assembled a very high quality technical program with over 110 papers. Technical sessions will cover a wide range of themes, including heavy oil and bitumen recovery methods, material balance and reservoir modelling, drilling and completions, equipment and facilities and many others. The Conference will also feature several special sessions, and continue CIPC's tradition of hosting a Graduate Student Paper Competition.

Make no mistake that technical papers are at the core of this Conference, but there is much more to this event. As in previous years, we will be offering a program of 11 tutorials on the 15th of June covering a wide variety of topics of interest to practitioners in both oil and gas. This year, we've focused on those skills that we believe will best help us deal with the technical challenges we face.

We will also be hosting a luncheon on each day of the Conference, two of which will feature prominent keynote speakers. The luncheon on the 16th of June will feature the energy economist, Peter Tertzakian, author of the best-selling book, A Thousand Barrels a Second. For the luncheon on the 17th of June, the speaker will be the Honorable Mel Knight, Energy Minister of Alberta. Last, but not least, I especially invite all attendees to a Mixer, which will take place on the first day of the Conference. Of course... following the technical sessions!

This Conference continues to be one of the best values in the industry without equal. The modest registration fee will give you access to a wide range of technical subjects and themes. As is CIPC custom, we will provide the convenience and flexibility of corporate passes and single-day registrations. And remember - those who register early will enjoy a significant discount - so don't miss out!

My heartfelt and special thanks go out to the volunteers and our sponsors who have assembled this program. Without their dedication to the promotion and exchange of technology, and the financial support from our corporate sponsors, this Conference would not be possible. So... if you plan to stay abreast of the latest industry advances, network and exchange ideas with your peers, as well as heighten your technical horizons all at a very nominal cost, then mark the 15th through 18th of June on your calendars and attend CIPC 2009. If you are coming from out of town, don't forget to include extra time to enjoy some of Calgary's famous western hospitality, or take in the natural beauty of nearby areas such as Banff National Park or Kananaskis Country.

Our website will be updated on a regular basis as the program advances, so please check back often for details and deadlines.

I look forward to seeing you there!
