Formation Damage in Production and Injection Wells – What is it and Why Should I Care?*

Brant Bennion, P.Eng.*
President, Hycal Energy Research Laboratories Ltd.

Brant Bennion is Hycal’s president and is a project engineer with over 20 years of domestic and international technical expertise in the area of formation damage and fluid flow in porous media. Brant has authored or co-authored over 170 technical papers on a variety of subjects, including multi-phase flow in porous media, formation damage, underbalanced drilling, fluid phase behavior and enhanced oil recovery. Brant received his B.Sc. in chemical and petroleum engineering from the University of Calgary with distinction in 1984 and is pursuing his Ph.D. degree. He received Best Technical Paper of the Year awards from the Petroleum Society in 1993 and 1995. Brant has been a Director of the Petroleum Society on both the Calgary Section and National Boards for over ten years and has served in various capacities such as Continuing Education Director, Student Affairs Director, Secretary, ATM Technical Program Chairman, ATM General Co-Chairman and Chairman, and Chairman-Elect of the Society. He is Chairman of the Petroleum Society of CIM for 2002 and is also a member of SPE. Brant is married and has four children.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: During the course of Brant Bennion’s term as Petroleum Society Chairman, he will be visiting all of the Sections and providing his Distinguished Lecture to each Section as a feature of his visit. Therefore, all arrangements (i.e., logistics and costs) for bringing Brant’s Distinguished Lecture to the Sections will be borne by the Petroleum Society National Office in Calgary.

Bob Pearson, P. Eng.

Bob Pearson is President and Chief Petroleum Engineer for Adams Pearson Associates Inc., a petroleum engineering consulting firm with offices in Calgary, Dallas, Halifax, Houston, St. John’s and Tunis. From 1970 to 1980, he worked for Shell International, followed by a position with Petro-Canada from 1980 to 1982. In his current role, Bob has led numerous integrated field studies involving the G&G staff from Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd., the subsurface engineers from APA, and the respective client’s technical teams. He had previously specialized as a production engineer. Bob’s experience includes completion design, stimulation, artificial lift selection and design, sand control, and workover selection and planning. He instructs courses on various aspects of production engineering for Canadian and multinational companies, and for the Petroleum Society of CIM.

S.M. Farouq Ali, P.Eng.
Honorary Professor of Oil and Gas Engineering

S.M. Farouq Ali is Honorary Professor of oil and gas engineering at the University of Calgary, and also serves as a petroleum consultant. He holds B.Sc. (Hons.), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in petroleum engineering, and has served as professor at the Pennsylvania State University and in Alberta for over 38 years. Dr. Farouq Ali has authored over 500 papers and supervised over 200 graduate theses, and carried out over 200 reservoir studies. A recipient of numerous awards and two honorary doctorates from universities in Russia, he received the Petroleum Society’s Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and APEGGA’s Summit Award in 2001. Dr. Farouq Ali is also a member of SPE and a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania.
