Microseismic Fracture Mapping: From Unconventional Gas to SAGD

SPEAKER

Michael Mayerhofer, Applied Diagnostics Engineering Manager, Pinnacle Technologies

Microseismic mapping technology has become increasingly important for optimum development and completion of unconventional hydrocarbon systems. This presentation will give a brief introduction of microseismic mapping technology, followed by examples of mapping results from shales and tight gas reservoirs. Examples and discussion will demonstrate how to optimize well design, well placement and infill drilling strategies using microseismic data. In addition, other applications of fracture mapping, including that of Canadian SAGD projects, will be briefly outlined.

Michael J. Mayerhofer is the Applied Diagnostics Engineering Manager at Pinnacle Technologies in Houston. His responsibilities include the application of tiltmeter and microseismic hydraulic fracture mapping results for optimizing fracture completion, well placement and infill drilling strategies, the design and evaluation of hydraulic fracturing treatments, reservoir engineering and integrated field studies. His seventeen-year involvement with hydraulic fracturing and reservoir engineering includes fundamental research and real field applications in various global producing areas, and has resulted in over 40 technical papers and journal articles. Prior to joining Pinnacle Technologies in 1997, he worked for Union Pacific Resources in Ft. Worth. He has a Doctorate in petroleum engineering from Mining University Leoben in Austria. He was a member of the SPE Well Completions Committee from 1998 to 2001 and he currently serves on the JPT Editorial Committee.

Characterization of Tight and Unconventional Gas Reservoirs Using Rate Transient Analysis

SPEAKER

David Anderson, Vice President, Software Development, Fekete Associates

Rate Transient Analysis has become a popular method for determining reserves and characterizing reservoirs. Its primary draw is that it utilizes passive monitoring data, collected as a part of good production practice, and is thus practical and inexpensive. This talk will illustrate how RTA can be used to evaluate tight and unconventional gas reservoirs. The presentation will focus on evaluating reserves, drainage area and gas-in-place, qualifying reservoir flow regimes, identifying productivity issues and estimating permeability and fracture length. Various case studies will be presented to illustrate the concepts.

David Anderson (P.Eng) is Vice President, Software Development with Fekete Associates Inc. He has thirteen years of experience in the petroleum industry, including production optimization, gas deliverability modelling and welltest analysis. Over the past six years, he has lead the development of Fekete's F.A.S.T. RTA software, and has become a recognized expert in the area of production analysis techniques. David has authored numerous papers on the subject, for which he has been awarded two “Best Presented Paper” awards from the Petroleum Society (both in 2005). He also received SPE’s Outstanding Young Professional Award for the Rocky Mountain Region in 2008. He has lectured and presented industry courses all over the world on modern production analysis. David served on the SPE Canadian Section board during 2005-2007 as Director for the Young Professionals Initiative and currently serves on SPE’s Reservoir Description and Dynamics Committee.
